YOUR
ARE ABOUT TO VISIT
the Caribbean's best kept secret, the idyllic island we
call Roatan. You are sure to enjoy the sparkling beaches,
the verdant vistas, and the warm people, both local and
more recent arrivals.
INFORMATION
Roatan
is the largest and most developed of the Bay Islands,
which is a chain of islands about
40 miles northeast of mainland Honduras, Central America.
Roatan is approximately 35 miles long and 3 miles
wide. It is surrounded by part of the world’s
second largest barrier reef, which is second only
in size to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.Traveling to the island is easy through Continental airlines every Saturday and Sunday direct from Houston to Roatan, with TACA Saturday direct from Houston and Sunday direct from Miami, and from Atlanta to Roatan direct with Delta airlines. There are also indirect daily flights via San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
The friendly English population is a blend of British, Spanish,
Payan Indian and African cultures. Pirates, including Henry
Morgan, one time occupied much of Roatan. Slaves dropped
off
by the British are now a part of
a present day ethnic group on the the Island. A portion
of them are known as the Garifuna. These light hearted people
are famous for their traditional dance and festival costumes.
Along with pirate descendants, Spanish, English and ex-patriots
from all over the world are now residing on Roatan.
The currency used primarily on Roatan is the Honduran Lempira
and the U.S. dollar is widely accepted at a very reasonable
exchange rate.
Electricity is 110 volts, so a converter is not needed for
US appliances, but a voltage regulator and/or surge protector
is suggested for delicate electronics.
To prepare for your visit, be sure and bring a hat for the
sun, sunscreen, light, casual clothing and insect repellent.
Also, bring a relaxed attitude, since Roatan is located
right in the middle of tropics, where things happen at a
slower pace.
Medical assistance, in the rare chance it is needed, is
available in two small hospitals and several smaller clinics.
For major medical problems, it is a short 15 minute flight
to La Ceiba and or a slightly longer flight to San Pedro
Sula.
